Learning the Parts of a Window
Window terminology may seem confusing at first, but once you get the basics, you’ll be able to find the exact window part you’re looking for. Here are some basic terms used to identify parts of a window.
Trim – The trim extends beyond the window frame on the outside of the window. It allows the window to fit flush with the exterior wall when installed.
Frame – This is the stationary outer portion of a window that encloses either the glass directly or the sash.
Flush fin – These replacement windows are typically used in California and other markets with aluminum windows in stucco home exteriors. This method leaves the original aluminum window frame intact and provides very little opportunity for the stucco siding to be damaged.
Block frame – Also called insert replacement windows, are typically found in markets where wood windows are in place, and the exterior is siding or brick. In most parts of the country, the block frame window is simply a new construction window frame with the nail fin removed. Your contractor will want to ensure that there’s been no damage to the studs and there is proper insulation and flashing before using this type of window.

Apron – This is a piece of decorative trim installed against the wall immediately beneath the railing or sill.
Sash – The moveable horizontal and vertical portions of the window that contain glass.
Sill – The lowest part of the windows frame and usually sloped to allow water to run off.
Muntins – A short bar or strip of material that divides the glass creating the appearance of multiple pieces of glass.
Mullion – A structural member either horizontally or vertically placed between window units or sliding glass doors.
Jamb – The vertical sides of the windows frame.
Pane – A sheet of glass (double-paned means two sheets of glass)
Spacer – Used to separate two pieces of glass in a multi-paned window.
Insulated Glass – Also known as double-paned or gas filled windows containing argon or krypton gas to increase thermal efficiency
Balance Shoe – A block and tackle system used in the jamb liner of double-hung or single hung window units.
Weep Hole – Holes on the bottom of the window to allow water and condensation to escape.
