Make Your Small Bathroom Feel Bigger with Glass

If your bathroom space is small, it may seem like an impossible challenge to make it feel bigger.  Here are some design ideas to help you make your little bathroom feel larger by using glass.

Install Frameless Glass Shower Doors

Frameless glass shower doors can be completely transparent with limited hardware and no blocky obstructive frame to create a visual break; without that break, the eye continues to move without interruption, creating a sense of a larger and more open space.

If you’re looking to refresh your bathroom without a full remodel, frameless glass shower doors can be one of the best and most cost-effective ways to brighten up your bathroom and make it feel larger.

Choose a Frameless Glass Shower Enclosure

Two important elements to keep in mind when designing a small bathroom to feel bigger are clean sight lines and ample illumination.

Blocky framed showers or shower curtains can make a space feel dim and cramped by cutting off light and your line of sight.  A frameless glass shower enclosure can make a small bathroom feel larger by providing an openness and airiness that is missed when using a curtain or obstructive frame.

Add a Glass Screen Walk-In Shower

A glass walk-in shower is an open shower that is efficient in its use of space with minimal impediment.  This design option allows you to maximize the space in the bathroom by forgoing traditional shower parts such as frames, shower casings, and shower pans.

Using a solid wall in your walk-in shower design can make the space feel very tight and tiny. Using a clear glass shower screen or even frameless pattern glass is a great way to give the space a more airy, light, and expansive feel.

Sit your Shower in the Corner

Since the shower is typically the single largest item in your bathroom, for any bathroom, large or small, one of the most important design choices to be made involves where you place your shower and shower layout.

Installing a glass corner shower can be a great design option if square footage is in short supply in your bathroom.  Sometimes corners of bathrooms go unused, so adding a shower is the best way to make the most out of the space.  This type of small walk-in style shower can fit in almost any size bathroom with a corner to spare.  They can often be smaller than other styles of shower, but can still be unique.

You’ll need to consider the layout and amount of floor space you have to work with when picking a shower style.  A walk-in shower is great if you have the space for it, but a corner shower, or an alcove shower with a glass door, could be more suitable for a smaller bathroom design.

More Mirrors

Using a mirror to make a space feel larger is an old design trick that really works!  Mirrors make a space feel open and expansive by reflecting light and views, creating the illusion of depth.  Using mirrors to make your small bathroom feel larger and brighten up your space.

When choosing the mirror or mirrors for your bathroom, placement, size, and style can have a big effect on a small space.  A traditional small vanity mirror that is proportional to the size of the vanity is still a good choice.  With this option, you may wish to choose to add a second mirror in another location, increasing the amount of reflective surface for a brighter bathroom, as well as multi-user functionality.

Instead of a small mirror, you could opt for a very large mirror that extends from your vanity all the way up to your ceiling, or from wall to wall.  Not only will this option make your ceilings feel higher and your bathroom larger, but it also allows for multiple simultaneous users of the mirror space.

Use Glass Shelves

Glass shelves are a stylish and versatile way to maintain storage capacity while giving the bathroom a brighter more open feeling.  Like a mirror, a glass shelf is reflective, so light bounces off the glass instead of absorbing light as a dark plank shelf would.  Since they are transparent, light can pass freely through glass shelves, allowing the light to illuminate more of your space, which makes the space feel larger.

Glass shelves do not absorb moisture, and are easy to maintain.

Glass shelves are a perfect place to store things like soaps, health products, lotions, beauty products, or even potted plants.

Making design choices for a small bathroom is not just about simply making the most of limited square footage; it’s about creating a space that is functional and fits your style.
