Tips Bringing More Natural Light Into Your Home

A good source of natural light in your home can brighten up a room, decrease lighting costs, and elevate your mood. From changing interior design elements to installing replacement windows, there are a lot of things you can do to bring more natural light into your house.  Want to let the sunshine in?  Increasing the amount of natural light in your home can be easy with these tips.

Eliminate Obstructions – If you want the sun to shine in you’ll want to make sure that there aren’t furniture pieces or window treatments blocking the light.  Heavy, blackout type, curtains can be a great option for a bedroom but you probably don’t want to use them in other spaces.  Consider replacements that are lighter in both fabric type and color.

You may also want to check your landscaping outside your windows to make sure bushes and trees are not blocking all of the natural light.  If you have a bush that has grown too tall and is preventing the sunlight from entering your home, trim it back for a better view and more light.

Add Mirrors and Reflective Surfaces – Adding a mirror to a wall across from a window can almost double the amount of light in a room.  Decorating your interior with other shiny objects and surfaces can create the same effect.  Design options like glass table tops, mirrors, metallic fixtures, reflective tiles, or other shiny accents can bounce sunlight around a space and brighten a room.

Choose Lighter Colors – Darker colors can absorb light and make your home feel dark and dreary.  Painting interior walls, ceilings, and exterior eaves with a lighter brighter color like white, light tan, or gray can give your room the sunny boost it needs. You can also change to lighter floor coverings like carpets, tiles, or wooden floors.  Hardwood floors that are kept polished and shiny will help to reflect more light into your room.

Replacement Windows and Doors – Upgrading your windows is a great way to increase the amount of natural light in your home.  Advancements in door and window manufacturing allow for increased exposed glass surfaces with fewer obstructions to let in more natural light.  Windows and doors with narrow frames and low-profile hardware can brighten up a room.  The Milgard® Trinsic® Series of home windows and patio doors offer the maximum available viewable glass area.  The narrow frame profile provides a sleek, clean look, allowing you to capitalize on the natural light available for your room while letting your view take center stage.
