Improving an Old Shower

If your bathroom looks dated it can color the perception of your whole home.  After the kitchen, the bathroom is likely the most frequently used room in your house.  You can try to dress up an outdated bathroom with new accessories, but an old shower can ruin the look.  Here are some ideas for what to do if your shower looks old.

Cleaning an Old Shower

Shower Door Before Cleaning

Because of how often it gets used your shower can be one of the most challenging things to keep clean.  And because the shower is usually the focal point of the bathroom, a dingy shower can make the whole bathroom look bad.  To take your shower from dull and dreary to clean and sparkly try giving it a detailed scrub.  For many showers you’ll want to avoid using any abrasive cleaners that can scratch the finish, but there are plenty of non-abrasive cleanser options available.  You can also choose to create your own cleaning products using ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, peroxide, and water.

To get into hard-to-reach nooks and crannies, try using an old toothbrush.  For other stubborn areas in a tile shower, use a scrub brush along with a baking soda paste or commercial cleanser.  You can also help keep your shower clean by rinsing and drying it after each use to prevent build-up and water stains.

Polishing Shower Glass

If your bathroom shower has a glass door, keeping it sparkling clean can also make your shower look newer.  In addition to old-fashioned but effective vinegar and water glass cleaner, there are many powerful commercial products that you can use to make your shower glass look clean and clear.  Be sure to read the label on these products to be sure that they are well suited to your glass shower door.

After polishing your glass shower door, trying using a squeegee after each use to keep your shower glass clean by cutting down on water spots and soap scum build-up.

Upgrade your Old Looking Shower Fixtures or Hardware

A fairly inexpensive and easy way to update an old shower is to replace the fixtures.  New faucets and a modern showerhead can easily transform the look and feel of your bathroom, giving it an elevated look.  It’s a simple and cost-effective way to make some impactful improvements to your home.

Buy a Brand New Glass Shower Door
