To open the Milgard Essence Series double-hung window, release the lock and slide open the bottom sash.  The window sashes can tilt inward.  First locate the two tilt latches on the top of the bottom sash.  Slide the latches toward the center and pull towards you to disengage the sash from the window frame.  Rotate the bottom sash until it rests on the window sill.  Now pull downward on the upper sash until it is about six inches above the open bottom sash.  Slide the tilt latches inward and pull the sash towards you.  You may rest the top sash on the open bottom sash.  To close, rotate the upper sash until it is fully seated in the jamb.  Pull the upper sash up until it stops in the closed position.  Now rotate the bottom sash until it is fully seated into the jamb.  Once seated, push the bottom sash down and inward at the same time.  This will ensure proper seating of the locking system.
